Day is done....

Oh wow! Day 3...these pirates are really keeping us jumping...hopping....fishing....cooking...

This morning 5 or 6 of them were up early and Josiah managed to land a 5 lb. Bass down at the pier. Old Salt....Captain Gramps...is thinking maybe he'll have to be skipping the hot tub and heading down to the pier in the future!

The kids shot the b-b guns and bow and arrows again and tomorrow will be the competition for archery, guns, swimming, races, boating and other contests.

They all swam- boated- and fished for about 3 hours this afternoon. Tonight Old Salt took about 4 or 5 of them out fishing...no fish tonight. We are thankful for NO rain! The kids are having a ball swimming, boating, fishing, playing games, playing in the sand, making different crafts...singing crazy songs...(moms and dads will lOVE them!) We practiced skits for stunt night this morning and then they wanted to perform them right away...tonight we performed them all again in preparation for parent's night tomorrow night. Lots of giggling and laughter. Tonight we played "dusk and dark" hide and go seek with the "light up" bracelets. Even Old Salt Captain Gramps and Beauty Gram played and ran with the best of them! We followed that up with root beer floats and a final skit presentation they hadn't seen before.

Tomorrow is our last day...it has been so much fun! God is so good and we are so grateful to HIM to be able to have the kids here this week! Caitlin as been so great as our assistant "leader/camper" Her expertise on "pirates" is amazing!

Pirate Camp has been great so far, mateys! We had a great time yesterday on a treasure hunt. The loot was ice cream bars!! We also went down to the park and got sprayed by a fire truck, after learning about fire safety. This morning, Captain Josiah Bones caught a five-pound largemouth bass. Wow!!

We have two teams- Red Team and Blue Team. The Red Team has Black Dog (Tori), Fire Ant (Haley), Pirate Curly (Ashley), and Swabby (Ana) as team members. The Blue Team has Captain Josiah Bones, Captain Black Eyebrow (Jonathan), Long JonMichael Silver, and me (Catalina)! Pirate Curly was the first pirate who had to walk the plank!

Yesterday, we also had a good time learning about the origin of evil. We heard the story of Eve and the apple and the snake, and we made our own snakes out of old ties. SSSSS! This morning, as I got out of the shower, Swabby's diamond-print snake slithered under the door. She did a good job on the stitches.

We also finished our flags after I gave a quick report on the colors and designs used on pirate flags. The Red Teams design is a skull across an hourglass with crossed fishing poles. The Blue Teams design is a black widow spider with the red hourglass and the message TIME IS RUNNING OUT. THIS FROM L.J.M.S., J.B., C.B.E., C. (The hourglass design was intended to show that time was running out for the pirates' victims if they did not surrender at once).

Pirate camp has been a lot of fun!! Thanks to Beauty Grams and Captain Gramps for organizing it!

Camp Re-Cap

Camp Re-Cap
To GOD be the glory…GREAT things HE has done.
We feel so blessed and privileged to have been graced by GOD to have this camp for our grandchildren. It is His grace and mercy that allowed us to have the training and experience that we could even pull off something like this. We want to give HIM all the glory and honor for anything that our grandchildren experienced that was good at our home this past week.
It started on Wednesday- when the Smith van pulled into our front yard with all the campers! This included our 8 oldest grandchildren- ages 14, 12,12, 10, 8, 8, 7, 6 .We were ALL so excited. The kids got to work pitching the tents- the girls and boys’ tent! After a quick lunch we started in with our first project- the Hike by one of the twins. She had put together a booklet of leaves that she wanted them to identify- (she and her sister had come last week and marked the trail with orange tape so they knew EXATCTLY what they were doing). The campers were all so attentive and had a great time. The youngest camper was so glad to get back to camp that she fell to the ground and collapsed on her back pack!
Swimming that afternoon and for the next 2 days was a highlight. The kids had a canoe, a paddle boat and an inflatable boat so they played- switched boats- swam- had such a great time. Our lake is VERY low (see the sea wall on the canoe picture? The water is supposed to be to the top of that!) Anyway, the kids wore life vests but they could stand almost anywhere in the bay we are on so we didn’t have to worry too much about them- we both kept our eyes on them at all times though. You would think this would have worn them all out! No….our other activities included crafts consisting of a nature vase made from things they collected on the hike, they painted a plaster figurine, also painted a bird house, and make a leaf transfer cover for their camp notebook. We had marching class, archery class, shooting class (b-b guns);
Rope knot tying class excellently taught by the oldest of the boys (8)- he had handouts and all, then the other twin taught a class on “Fishing”. Her class was complete with packets for each camper with a “lure, hook and heavy line to practice making fisherman’s knots. She also taught on how to work several different kinds of lures, what to wear when fishing, etc. Even Dave and I learned some thing! These kids are teachers in the making! There was also a checker tournament and Chinese checker tournament which were bracketed so they played them in their “free time”. The kids were divided into the red and blue team and each meal one of the groups was on k.p. and helped prepare and clean up the meal. Camp songs were sung after the noon meal- devotions after breakfast and before bed. Bedtime…the boys never managed to stay in their tents all night- first night- too light…then too hot…so they came inside and slept. All the girls stayed out the first night and all but 2 came in the second night. Our nights were still 90 degrees at 10 o’clock so they had some legitimate excuses!
The camp director had trouble sleeping! Only got 4 hours the night before they came and 4 the first night they were here. At 6:30 A.M-FIRST morning- ONE HOUR EARLY- the trumpeter played Reveille! This was accompanied by shouts of, “Yea, we can come out of our tents now!” Dave and I wearily swung our legs over the edge of the bed and rolled out…ready for another day of camp. Dave was the GREATEST Grand-dad ever. He was at my side helping every moment and single handily taught the shooting classes- also drove the boat so all could go tubing on the lake-
took one group out in the boat fishing one night- was just so wonderful. Without him- camp could have not gone on.
In our Bible devotional times we studied the Proverb for the day- also Col. 3: 12-15 about clothing ourselves with kindness and humility.
All the children got along so well- they truly enjoyed each other and there was much laughter, squealing and fun.
The last night the parents who were in town came and had dinner with us and the kids did a marching drill, sang some of their camp songs, showed off their crafts and ended with a treasure hunt which the oldest camper had written. It was so well written in rhyme and verse that they needed the author to help them out on the 17 clues taking them all around the property several times!
At 9:00 when they all left...we were left with just a very quiet home...the swing now stands lonesome and waiting for the time when the grandchildren will return!

A Camping We Will GO!

The First Annual Grandkids Camp began today at 12:00 sharp, when the Red Team and Blue Team pitched their tents and unloaded their gear. The Red Team consists of Cname, Hname, Joname, and JMname; the Blue Team includes Tname, Ashname, Jname, and Aname. The Red Team started out on KP, and all enjoyed a delicious lunch of sandwiches.
After lunch, the teams went on a nature hike hosted by Hname. They hiked through thick forest and even braved the treacherous “Tar Pits” mud by the Lake Fork edge!! They learned how to identify eight different kinds of leaves, including poison ivy, and also how important it is to mark our trails.
After the nature hike, the grandkids got to do a special craft- gluing twigs around a Mannatech bottle to make a unique vase or pencil holder. After the twigs were in place, raffia was tied in a decorative bow around them and various woodland objects (pinecones, leaves, acorns, etc) were used to further decorate the vases. This fabulous craft was the invention of Hname.
Then the grandkids all trooped down to the lake, where Cname and JMname sank knee-deep in “Tar Pits” mud!! There was a canoe, a paddleboat, and an inflatable raft available, and the children were soon out boating happily. Jname and Joname took the paddleboat out, giving Cname a lift on their way out to deeper waters, and Ashname and JMname used the inflatable raft. Tname and Hname paddled the canoe, while Aname sat happily between the rowers’ seats. Cname jumped off the paddleboat to swim before the water got too deep, and they continued merrily on their way.
However, the boating adventure became even more adventurous when Ashname and JMname decided to switch boats with Jname and Joname! To add to the confusion, Aname decided to bail out of the canoe and try to jump into the inflatable, while Grammy and GrandDad watched helplessly from 100 feet away. JMname succeeded in jumping into the paddleboat, whereupon he and Joname paddled away, leaving Jname and Ashname yelling after them. Aname climbed into the steadily deflating raft and began blowing it back up, while Grammy blew the whistle, recalling the canoe and Cname, but the canoe had to be sent back out to resolve the differences between the paddleboat and inflatable raft.
After the swimming (and hosing off from the rich, black lake mud), the teams designed their team flags. The Blue Team became the Blue Mountains. Their navy blue flag featured a blue mountain, outlined in white, with bears and trees on it, and the names of their team in white clouds around it. The Red Team became the Corsairs, and designed a double-sided flag. One side portrays a ship in full sail with the word “Corsairs” along one edge; the other displays the charming skull and crossbones, along with a team initial in each corner.
After the Blue Mountains started KP, a supper of hot dogs, baked beans, and salad was served. After supper, Grammy surprised us all with chocolate pudding for dessert- yum!
Then Tname of the Blue Mountains taught a fishing class. The grandkids all learned how to tie a fisherman’s knot, what polarized glasses were, and were instructed in the various lures and how to fish them. The Blue Mountains went out on a boat with GrandDad to fish; the Corsairs will have their turn tomorrow.
For now, all is peaceful and still. The wind blows cool and gentle, and the wind chimes tinkle musically in the zephyr. The only indication that there are any children still on shore is the movement of the tents, which suggest that they contain a dozen angry rats. Tomorrow will be just as good!

I have tried 3 times to download pictures...they down load but don't appear here! Maybe tomorrow. I am too tired tonight to try any more...it is 10:30- all the boys have come in...too light...too hot...JM...too loud...haven't heard a peep from the girls!

Put on Kindness, humbleness of mind..Colossians 3: 12

Tomorrow camp begins...I think I am as ready as I am going to be! It reminds me of my teaching days...there was always something more that could be prepared or perfected...you just can't do it all!
I have been seeking the Lord on what kind of spritual truths I can impart to my grandchildren in the days ahead...I seem to be coming back to this theme...kindness.

What is it? Webster's 1828 edition says: Kindness: That temper or disposition which delights in contributing to the happiness of others, which is exercised cheerfully in gratifying their wishes, supplying their wants or alleviating their distresses."

Lord, let me show that kind of kindness to my husband and grandchildren in the next few days...and in all my life! I need the grace of God for this!

Another definition:
"Kindness is shown in a gentle tone of voice and in kind acts. Kindness draws people to us whereas criticism and harshness pushes them away. This shoudl not be a surprise as 'it is the kindness of God that leads us to repentance. "
(Romans 2:40) Martha Peace
I would ask for your prayers in the days ahead that I can show this kind of kindness and be able to teach some aspect of this to the children.
